The rhizome is horizontal, branched, creeping. The leaves are opposite, on short petioles, elongated-ovate, pointed, with a heart-shaped base and sharp-edged edges. The flowers are small, red-violet, bisexual, sessile. The plant blooms from late June to September. The fruit consists of 4 dark brown nuts, about 0.75 mm long, enclosed in the remaining calyx. Fruits are formed very rarely. The plant propagates vegetatively with the help of root layers.
